What is testosterone?
Testosterone is a hormone produced by male testicles. It is
also produced in small quantities in female ovaries and adrenal system.
Testosterone helps maintain men's:
Growth
Sex drive
Facial and body hair
Sperm production
Red blood cell production
Muscle strength and mass
Bone density
Muscle mass, etc.
Testosterone levels dip with age
Testosterone levels are at their peak during adolescence and
early adulthood leading to intense sexual desires. However, as people get older
their testosterone level dips. In fact, it declines about 1 percent a year
after age 30 or 40.
It is, however, important for aging men to determine if
declining testosterone level is owing to normal or because of a condition known
as hypogonadism in which the body is unable to produce normal amounts of
testosterone due to a problem with the testicles or with the pituitary gland
that controls the testicles. Testosterone gels or injections are normally
prescribed by doctors to remedy the situation.
